I look for that quiet space inside of me.
Finding that space within yourself is easier than one might think. We create a state of mind by the things we do, and we cement them by the things we tell ourselves. We don't need anything special, no need to climb a mountain top, or sit in the dark for 8 hours, attempting to empty your mind. Mindfulness can help ease you into your own inner sanctum, because it allows you to become aware of your thoughts and feelings. A lot of us live on the surface of where there is a lot of upheaval and wilderness. We just have to remember that deep calm and awareness is inside each of us. It does take practice, but it can be done. You can be in a very chaotic environment and close your eyes and go into the space that calmness resides.
Breathe in, Breathe out. Our breath is our best friend and tool, it's always with us. Harnessing the power of your breath can help you to shift your state of mind. Once you have a breathing practice it is just a matter of remembering to just breathe. There is a breathing practice that has been a go to for many people. It is the 4-7-8 breath and can be done anywhere and anytime. Close your mouth and inhale through your nose and count to four. Hold your breath as you count to seven, and then exhale through your mouth for a count of eight. The long exhale helps to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which in turn causes a relaxation response in the body. Also, it allows us to connect to ourselves and let go of resistance. The connection to ourselves is the most important connection we will ever have.
Feel the truth that you are safe and loved:
Remind yourself that you are breathing and that you are protected. First and foremost, have compassion for yourself. Sometimes things will seem out of control, but you don't have to be.
Visualize your happy place:
This is something else that might take practice, but becomes easier the more you do it, and the stronger your visualization, the more effective it is. It is perfectly okay if you have to work on what that go to happy place is.
You can have fun with this part because it can be anything that brings you joy. The beach, a beautiful lake. Your pet, or most definitely someone that you love. Maybe a favorite vacation. Sounds and textures work also, the more vivid the more your body will start to feel like you are actually there, which will relax you.
